Style Inspiration: Emma Dalen
If you consider scrupulously combing through racks of clothes at your favorite thrift stores a shopping trip well-spent, I’ve found your new favorite Instagram account. Not so sure how you feel about buying secondhand? The posts on this page will have you planning a consignment-shopping day in no time.
Emma Dalen, a Minnesotan, actor, fashion lover and, yes, genius thrifter, has me taking notes with every outfit post. Get to know her below.
Her style: My style is a big mish-mash of whatever catches my eye. It’s very eclectic and heavily influenced by color, comfort, silhouette and vintage and historical fashions, along with my experiences growing up with theatre as an integral part of my life. Music and literature are also a huge influence for me.
Why she loves fashion: It gives me a way to express myself and is a way I can stand out from the crowd. Fashion also helps with my mental health: I’ve found that when I put effort and care into my appearance, I feel better.
Best style advice she’s been given: Don’t listen to people who try to tell you what you should wear for your body shape. If you want to wear it, wear it.
Her tips for going thrifting: Check the sweater section for cashmere—I have a huge collection all from thrift stores. Be sure to check for holes and stains, too.
What makes her feel beautiful: I feel beautiful when I know my hair looks good and when I feel great in my outfit. Complements help as well!
Her female role model: I have a few. My fourth and eighth grade teacher Ms. Basant, Helena Bonham Carter, Beyoncé, Cyndi Lauper, Boudica, Morticia Addams, Helen Mirren and Emma Thompson.
What she’s wearing: My lavender cashmere is a thrifted cardigan I found at Goodwill-Easter Seals Minnesota. I got the pink scarf at Forever 21 on clearance for $3.00, as well as my tasseled choker. The very distressed boyfriend jeans and white henley T are from Old Navy.
